Depends what you expect out of it. I have sometimes used them to read the bottom and find dropoffs. I do nearly all freshwater fishing and beyond that have never found much use for it.

I hate to ask this, but what is a fish finder? From the name it sounds like a new techno gadget used to find out what is under the water so you can locate fish. Am I even close?

A fishfinder is a sonar device that "reads" the water and specifically the bottom. It will tell you where the weeds are, if the bottom is rocky, and indicate things moving in the water. All of this will be displayed on a screen. They're not much use in shallow water but once the depth gets to twenty or thirty feet they will find fish. That doesn't mean you'll catch them.
