NORTHERN DANCER
The whiff of fresh brewed perked coffee bubbling

a northern tune as the hot water splashes into the glass knob,
the crackling of a fire and the glow of the flame,
the scent of fresh lake water,
the haunting hoot of the Great Horned Owl,
the shrill of a Loon in the dead of night,
the quiet of the forest,
the noisy Raccoon in search of a meal,
the refreshing swim in water that makes your hair squeaky clean,
the scrumptious meals cooked on an open fire,
a glimpse of a Black Bear with her cubs,
and the view of a Mighty Moose.
Images, that capture the imagination and refreshes the spirit, and releases the soul.
As I thought of these things, I looked across, and there
laying on his side on the sandy shore, seemingly resting,
is the instrument that made all these things possible for me.
My Canoe.
Not just any canoe, but my
Souris River Prospector extra light Kevlar canoe
that has fostered my romance with the wilderness for decades.
For most of the year, it stretches out across the back shed
and sleeps until it's beckoned to awaken. It delights in the
feel of the warm sun and responds to the cleansing shower of the hose
and the preparations for the first trip.
It noise dives into the ripple of the water like a porpoise
skimming along the surface.
He carries a heavy load with ease and manages the choppy waters with confidence.
On rare occasions, he has been my shelter from wind and storm.
It likes to dance on the water.
But most of all it is obedient to my whims and wishes and the places I want it to go.
He has been faithful in carrying me, my belongings, my dog, and my friends
to campsites that are both pleasant and picturesque
and far away from stress and strain.
That's why I call it Northern dancer
and that's why I use the name.
