I find that I can sleep better at camp

I think it's the fresh air, sun, and activity that knocks me out. I do sleep very well while we're out camping. But I must admit, that I've had to use an air mattress the last couple years. I fall asleep fine, but wake up stiff and achy on just a cot. Yes, I'm getting older.:tinysmile_hmm_t2:

    Desert camping?

While reading another thread, I was just wondering if anyone had been camping in a desert? I don't know if I'd be up for this kind of challenge. How cold did it get at night? What activities are there to fill your days? How long did you actually stay out in the desert? What supplies did...

    Do you bring books camping?

I do usually bring one book to read, to keep myself busy if the kids are out with their dad fishing or tubing and I just wanted a little quiet time. I don't think I've ever be able to manage to read an entire book while on a camping trip though.

    Noise Ordinance?

At the parks we've stayed at the rangers are pretty strict when it comes to keeping things reasonably quiet by about 10pm. To be honest, my family is usually lights out by then.:tinysmile_hmm_t:

    Clothing

We go hiking in spring, summer, and fall. I really don't like being out when it cold and icy in the winter. We subscribe to the layers way of dressing, the cooler it is the more layers. We stick with light colors so that we can see the bugs easier and it does keep us a bit cooler in the heat...

    Cell phones and camping

Most of our camping trips are only a few days at a time. So the kids know that for those few days they are going to be out of contact with their friends because cell phones are a no-no. many times we bring one or more of their friends along. We try and keep them busy, and for the most part...

    Family hiking?

Yes, I agree with you. The kids do pretty well though and like a challenge, so I have to really find a good middle ground. After all, they have to be able to make it back. Many times we'll make it a nature hunt and I'll have the kids looking for different things, plants, trees, unusual rocks...

    Winter camping?

Once the weather starts to get really cold, I have to admit camping goes out of my mind completely. We like to spend time outdoors in the winter, and will go sledding and skiing, but we do a day-trip or stay at a hotel. I like my hot showers on those cold winter morning . :tinysmile_hmm_t:

    Technology and the outdoors

We always bring our cellphones, a radio and a camera. really, we don't use our cellphones, but we have them, just in case. The camera is a must bring to catch those special moments that always seem to happen when we go camping.

    Pain from the bike seat

This would be the way that I would go for your type of riding needs. Just a little bit of a heads up, they look odd to say the least, but you'll be able to walk easier after a ride. I only ride the paved bicycle paths, so the seat pads take care of me pretty well.:tinysmile_hmm_t:

I caught a fish and it was this big....

Ok, people, let's get some bragging rights going. What was your largest catch, type, length and weight(if you remember or weighed it)? When and where did you make your great catch? Don't be shy, boast all you want!

    Repo's

I don't go to these auctions. Considering how big of a potential purchase it could be, I just wouldn't be able to really be comfortable making a decision that quickly on such little information. I'd much rather try and find a used boat where I can ask 8 million questions and take my time...

    Where Have You Camped?

Most of the places that we have camped have been pretty local to where we live. I would love to go and see some other parts of the country though. But, for us, camping is more of our quick getaway and not a huge planned out event, and more planning would be required if we went somewhere we...

The piece of equipment that you've had forever and can't do without.

We have a dutch oven that we bring camping each and every time that we've had for years and years. I think it will be a part of our families camping tradition for as long as we can lug it around.

    Finally

Congrats on the big event and on being almost done with the planning. talk about a big job. Just remember the most important thing is to enjoy the event. Let go of all the little things and focus on the joy of the day, that's what you'll remember in the years to come.

    Anyone ever go ice fishing?

My brother-in-law is the fisherman in the family and each winter he talks about wanting to go ice fishing. He has yet to actually do it. I just don't understand the draw. So has anyone here ever gone ice fishing? What is the appeal? Do you actually catch any fish? Is there any special...

    warmups and stretches

I would love to say that I stretch out every time I go for a hike, but I do forget many times. I'm usually so ready just to get going that I don't even think about stretching. I know it's a good idea, and probably should get more in the habit of stretching each time.

Do you stop and enjoy the scenery while hiking?

I do enjoy the scenery, and nature in general. There are times when I'll stop just to listen. I live in the city, so when I go out on my hikes, I love to just listen to the sounds and peace of nature.

Do you hike in cold/winter weather?

I don't mind if there's a bit of a chill in the air, but once it starts to snow and get icy, I usually call it a season and hibernate from the sport until spring starts to roll around. I was just wondering if any of you still keep at it during the winter months?
