I was watching a guy fly fishing last summer. The motion involved with the casting is quite nice to watch. Why is the casting done that way, though?

Fly fishing is an ancient form of fishing. It originated to allow fishermen to cast the line further and more precisely by attaching the line to a rod. With fly fishing you are actually casting the line, not the lure. It's the opposite with spin casting.

Thanks--glad you can appreciate what I was saying. I always tell people who have been spin casters and want to learn to fly cast to use their non-dominant hand, as fly casting has a completely different feel, as well.
