Diving in the Gulf

I live on the east coast of Florida and haven't ever been in the ocean on the other side of the state so does anyone know if it is a good area for diving over there or even snorkeling? Do they have any reefs on that side of the state? I'm thinking of going on a vacation this spring either in Sarasota or somewhere south like Marco Island.

I used to snorkel in the Gulf, but it was down in the Keys. It was always a good time with lots to see, but I can't attest to anything north of Key Largo.

When I lived in Kemah, Texas I dove for awhile in the Gulf.
Not much differant than diving in Thailand, Hawaii or the Aegean.

There are lots of places to Dive on the Gulf side of Florida. If you are going to Sarasota or Marco Island, you won't have any problems finding some really nice places for this.
