During the summer time, fighting fish for long periods of time can cause them to die due to the lactic acid build up. So do you switch to a heavier weight line and leader? Do you spend extra time to revive the fish before letting them go?
If I actually get to the point where I think its too long of a battle I will give up before I chance dealing with dead fish. I notice I never did this when I was younger which was part of the lesson learned.
