What container do you use to purify water? How do you get water from a stream, lake, etc. into your container? These are often disregarded but important questions.

I use a MSR Sweetwater filter to pump directly from the source into my water container. In the coldest months I leave that home due to freezing problems and chemical treat or boil my water, usually scooping it up with my cook pot. I just make sure I boil some water in the pot to sterilize it before eating from it .

Yeah, the pot I cook in usually does it for me. I boil the water I'm going to drink first and set it aside in another container and then I use the pot to cook in.

I generally use regular containers. Boiling it is the best way to do it, but I've also tried using granular calcium hypochlorite (which works in the same way as household bleach, but is said to be safer).

I also try to aerate the water by pouring it from one clean container to another several times. It gets rid of the "flat" taste.
