What is it about salt water fish that makes them suicidal in fish tanks? If I don't keep mine covered the little guys will jump right out and suffocate!

I think it is just in their nature to jump like that. Seeing that they are salt water fish, they need a lot of room to swim. It could be a sign that you need a larger tank.

I have had fresh water fish to do that. I once had a Clown Loach that jumped out while I was at work and he was dried when I got home. I finally learned you HAVE to have a cover on the tank in order to keep fish. I have even used a cover over the filter or the openings in the back of the aquarium light.

I never thought about that. I only had gold fish in a bowl and they were completely fine. But I think sea water needs more space knowing they live in a vast ocean space.

It comes naturally to all types of fish to jump for food or to escape danger, they just don't think that they are going to land anywhere dry.
