What are you looking do with the kayak? Have you ever tried one? The reason why I ask is you have several types, sea kayaks, sit in and sit on tops are your three basic styles. Then from there you can get them for different functions, like fishing or racing.

The kayaks used to shoot rapids and travel on rivers are different from the ones used in ocean waters. Some sea kayaks have a rudder to assist with the 'steering' of the vessel, and a river kayak would quickly lose such a feature in the first white-water run.

I have a friend that used to do white-water kayaking in Central British Columbia, I tried sitting in the type of kayak he uses, and promptly up-ended myself.

It all depends on the type of water you are going to be on.. and the intent of your trip..

I have a few different kayaks and suggest you rent a couple type to try them out...
The more you get into whitewater boats the shorter they get, I've seen 6' long boats... and sea kayaks can exceed 20' if you go for the big ones...
