    not fun, but necessity?

Never had to camp out in a tent but when our house was sold more quickly than we anticipated, we had to move four of us into a tiny camper for a couple of months until our new house was ready to live in. My wife really enjoyed going out to the barn in the mornings and picking out her clothes for...

    Annual Pheasant Hunt

On Pelee Island in Lake Erie, every fall they hold a pheasant hunt. It stretches over a couple of weekends or so. I went once but after awhile there seemed to be too many hunters for the number of pheasants. A friend of mine goes near the tail end of the hunt when there are fewer hunters and...

I just got a new tent!!!

Good for you. I remember when we used to go camping how much I hated the smell of old tents. When we finally got a four person for the two of us, and one we could actually stand up in and have room to move around in, camping was so much more enjoyable.

    Camping Buddies

My wife and I love to get away from it all together. It's nice catch up and just enjoy each other when we actually have time to relax together. We also love camping with our sons as well. We've had some good times together.

    Rain Fly Question

I agree about using tarps under and over the tent just in case of rain. I'd be reluctant to use an EZ Up because I'm sure along with a storm would come lots of wind and goodbye EZ Up - voice of experience speaking here.

    Charcoal Lighter Thingy

Back before gas grills, we had a plug-in barbeque starter. The end would heat up kind of like the element on a stove and when this was placed in the charcoal it didn't take long to get it going good.

Tire Blow Out - Oh No

I thought the tires were in good shape and we didn't pick up a nail. It seemed like it was the sidewall that gave out. We didn't use our trailer a lot so I'm sure this had something to do with the blowout.

    Any turkey hunters?

There is a couple of huge flocks in our area. They often sit in the field. Occasionally I'll see one on its own crossing our laneway and heading across the field into the woods. I'm surprised more hunters don't go after them.

Overnight ATV or Mountain Bike Trips

It can be a lot of fun but very tiring. I like to park the fifth wheel and then go exploring with the ATVs or some bikes. Then I have a soft and comfortable spot to lay my head down after an exhausting day.

Tire Blow Out - Oh No

A number of years ago, I was hauling a small trailer to my son's motocross races. It had everything in it from his bike, to his gear, to our camping stuff, coolers, duffels and way in the front furthest from the door was the spare tire, under half of this stuff. Of course, we were on the way...

    Beware Of Internet Scams

I've also heard that you need to be careful of Craigslist. People agree to purchase an item and arrange to meet you halfway at some neutral spot to pick up the item. When you get there, they rob you.

    Sliding out of the tent

Camping out in a tent in temperatures cold enough to have frost in the morning is not my idea of a good time, especially if nature calls in the middle of the night.

Dumb things you have seen people do in camp

I've seen a family with kids and a dog set up in an area that had signs warning of poison ivy in the site. I couldn't figure out why they did that but they only stayed one night - wonder why?

    Tent camping with toddlers?

We did do this in the past, but we were fortunate to have close friends with us who were like an aunt and uncle to our kids. They helped a lot. The kids usually slept like logs at night from all the fresh air and activity. You can do it.

    So jealous!

That is disappointing, but the season is just starting so hopefully you will have lots of other opportunities to get together and go camping with them or on your own.

    Using Our Generator

The start of my son's motocross racing season will be here starting next week. When the race is at a distance we take our "toyhauler" and the on-board generator really comes in handy because you basically camp in the middle of a field. But we rarely ever have to use it elsewhere as most sites...

    He any runners in here

I know it's a good idea to eat some carbs the night before, like pasta. This seems to really help with the energy the next day. And be sure to drink lots of fluids the couple of days leading up to a race. And I agree about not eating until after. Good luck next time.

    Canoe Race In The Adirondack's

Thanks for the info. I kind of wondered about how competitive and challenging it might be. I guess it's a two day race. I think we'll probably just go to the area in the next year or two and do some easy paddling on our own. That's more my speed.

    Dog fight

I would agree that your friend was in the right. I think anyone who brings a pet to a campground should keep them on a leash, regardless of the size. Not everyone likes animals and it's a matter of respect for others. So that other person should have had that dog on a leash too.

    an idea

Take time to get in shape and used to walking with a backpack on. Stay local at first until you gain confidence. Be sure to notify park rangers before venturing out to remote areas and also let your family know where you're going and how long you'll be away. If you can wear a watch that comes...
