    Wimped out

I'm sort of hanging my head in shame here. A buddy of mine wanted me to go on a trek today and I wimped out. It's just too darn cold today and I don't want to move off the couch, let alone walk up a mountain with the stiff wind that's blowing. I must be getting old.

    Final kayak day this year...

I spent the morning kayaking along the coast with my buddies. This is the final time the kayaks will be out this year so we spent some time paddling and then inspecting them for any issues. I tell you what, though, it was darn cold out on the ocean this morning!

Easy way to clean bony fish?

For example, I enjoy pickerel, but they are so bony! I end up either letting them go or passing them to a cousin who is much better at getting the bones out. He thinks it is funny so he won't show me how he does it - he's been picking on me about this since I was a kid. Is there an easier way...

    Anyone get a deer yet?

Bows are allowed now, but no firearms until Dec. 2 here in Massachusetts and regular shotguns are only allowed through Dec. 14. Maine's season starts Nov. 4, so I'm getting a non-resident license and going up there at least a couple times.

Ever thought of backpacking across Europe?

I guess this is a pretty popular idea with young people today, usually over the summer before going off to college. Apparently, it's today's version of 'doing the continent'. I'd never be able to do this now, given my age and the fact that I have a family and responsibilities, but I'm kind of...

    Mildewed tent

Is there a way to get mildew completely off a canvas tent? My brother-in-law was giving a large, well-made tent from someone he was doing work for and the guy had stored it improperly in a damp basement. The thing smells nasty and has visible mildew scattered through it all.

Best fishing on the East Coast?

I know more about Maine and New Hampshire (and a few in Mass.), but I'm sure there is great fishing all down the East Coast. Tell us about your favorite spot. I'd like to pick one to do a fishing vacation next year, so I can go someplace different.

    Maine moose lottery alternate

I didn't win a moose permit but my name did get drawn as a non-resident alternate so I still have a chance at bagging a moose this year. It's a lot better chance for a non-resident alternate to get the chance than it is for a native, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. My buddy and I already...

    Purifying water

If you were in a survival situation and didn't have water purification drops or iodine tablets, how would you make sure your water wasn't contaminated? I'm a prepper, to a degree anyway, and I have a stockpile of drops and tablets, but those wouldn't last forever if there was an apocalyptic event.

Denzel Washington is down the street...

They're filming scenes for an upcoming film, 'The Equalizer', or at least, they were yesterday afternoon and evening. I haven't walked down to see if they're still set up. I am not a huge movie or celebrity buff, but I couldn't resist walking down to see the set and catch a glimpse of Denzel -...

    Bacon wrapped car?

Yes, it's true. You can now bacon wrap your car, or at least, make it look that way. This would probably be cooler if it wasn't a Ford Fiesta, though. I wonder if this would attract wildlife? :tinysmile_tongue_t: Read more here.

Does the brand of beer make a difference?

I love to cook my fish with beer, especially trout. My buddy says that it tastes different when you use different kinds of beer - is that true? I've always just used Bud, as that's usually what I have in the cooler.

    Lake Cobbosseecontee last weekend

I finally uploaded a few pictures from my fishing trip last weekend. I was at a buddy's camp on Lake Cobbosseecontee. We went canoeing several times, and naturally, did a lot of fishing with the regular boat and even from the dock. We got both large-mouth bass and a few lake trout. That was...

Anyone here been on a real big game hunt?

As in, lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Well, not bears, actually. A lot of us have gone bear hunting. I'm talking about safari time or perhaps along the Amazon river. I haven't done that but I sure would like to before I kick the bucket.

    Preserving meat without power

I was thinking of ways to preserve meat if there was no electricity and jerky is the first thing that comes to mind. What other ways are there to preserve your meat if there is no electricity?

Anyone been up on a glacier?

I'm not much for snow, ice and cold, but I do think it would be pretty cool to walk across ice that's tens or hundreds of thousands of years old. Has anyone here ever done a trek like this?

    Are you a prepper?

I consider myself a prepper, although I haven't gone to the extremes that some survivalists have. I have close to a year's worth of food stored, along with various items and gear that I think may be needed in the event of a huge disaster. I'm still learning, but I'm a lot more prepared than...

    Anyone try SUP?

For those who haven't heard of it, S.U.P. is stand up paddleboarding and it seems to be the latest craze, especially on the coasts. I think it looks like fun, plus good exercise, so I'm thinking of scheduling a class to try it out.

    Restoring old cast-iron cookware?

My grandfather just passed me his old cast-iron cookware that he always took camping and fishing. The problem is that they weren't stored properly and they're thoroughly coated with rust or corrosion. Can these be restored for use again? If so, how?

    This humidity has to go

We have been dealing with nonstop high humidity for about 3 weeks now and I'm so tired of it. It's hard to enjoy the summer when the air feels so thick and wet that you could cut it with a knife.
