The reason the dog ran off the cat is that the dog (and I have a hard time using that term but . . .) was protecting its pack (ie the chihuahua looks at the family cat as part of the family and the outsider cat was well an outsider to be dealt with!). Also chihuahua's are ratters/mousers and may have just had a prey drive moment toward the cat. As for the chihuahua hiking; sorry leave it home; or train it to walk LONG distance. We have a mixed dog that is a bit larger than a chihuahua and I think she would walk forever given the chance; of course see is trying to keep up with the 50 pound plus lab/boxer mix in the family!
