Rope

When out in the boonies, especially if on a boat, the one thing we always have on hand is extra rope: preferably yacht-braid and not polypropylene (that's good for things like crab traps, though, because it floats).

If we intended to be gone a week or more, there was a minimum of 1500 extra feet of rope to be found on our sailboat: we were damned grateful for that, and more than once.

How much extra do you take, and why?

On Alpine climbs I like a minimum of at least 4 ropes - two statics, and two dynamics. Static lines make it a lot easier for z drags, and pulley systems should they be needed for a crevase rescue, hauling, or an absel....

It's never a bad idea to 'be prepared': it's Murphy's Law that if you plan for the worst case scenario, it never comes!

But 1500 feet of rope?

I would think it would only take one exasperating experience of being in a situation without enough rope to realize the importance of rope on a sailboat!
