When out in the boonies, especially if on a boat, the one thing we always have on hand is extra rope: preferably yacht-braid and not polypropylene (that's good for things like crab traps, though, because it floats).
If we intended to be gone a week or more, there was a minimum of 1500 extra feet of rope to be found on our sailboat: we were damned grateful for that, and more than once.
