    Common courtesy, please

I can recall so many occasions while fishing from my boat, just quietly minding my own business fishing, and then along come a couple of jet skiers just beyond where I'm fishing! Aren't they aware of what's going on around them?

How big does it have to be?

The Ozarks has lots of caves, many of which are even famous and open to the public for guided tours. We visited a few while vacationing there. No two are alike.

Favorite outdoor trip of all time

So far, it was a trip to the Grand Canyon with my family when I was growing up. It was mind boggling! I haven't been back since, but it's on my list.

How Many Have You Caught In a Day?

When I was a kid, my Dad hired a guide at Lake of the Ozarks to fish for white bass. There were three of us in the boat, and we all caught our limit of 25 each in 2 hours. It was amazing!

    Northern Michigan

I used to do quite a bit of camping and fishing in the Ludington and Baldwin areas. It's been a number of years since I did it, so I don't know the situation currently.

    Pack trips

One day, I'd like to go to the Grand Canyon and spend part of the time doing a pack trip on horseback. What is a good age for kids to be able to do something like this?

    Have Trouble Unhooking the Fish?

I've caught fish that swallowed the hook so deeply that I felt it was best to just cut the line off and leave the hook in the fish if it was a species I couldn't take. Otherwise, I will just kill it and clean it to eat.

    Back pack weight

I think that it is like anything else physical---it's probably best to gradually work up to "max capacity" rather than taking on too much too quickly.

Hiking with dogs when it is hot

I have two Chesapeak Bay Retrievers. I avoid much physical exertion for any of us during the hottest part of the day. I try to save that for morning or evening, and let them swim in the afternoon.

    Preferable Tinder?

Dried pine cones or dried pine needles are my personal favorites. If we have paper or cardboard from any food packaging items, it kills two birds with one stone.

    Teton National Park

My wife and I are looking ahead and are doing some vacation planning. It's our goal to camp in all the major National Parks someday. We're thinking about Teton this year. Ever go??

    Major influence?

My grandfather was a fisherman all his life from a young age. From when I was a young age he always included me in his fishing.

    Turn it off

I think to forget to take the safety off is quite forgivable! I just hope his lack of attention to detail doesn't apply to putting the safety on at the right times!

Where can you park Pop ups?

That's how we like to play it too. We have no children in school, so we have the flexibility to avoid going during peak times.

    Stinky shoes?

I kind of like my hiking boots to be a little stinky. It means I've really been out there doing some serious hiking! My dog likes 'em that way too! (Actually, some Kiwi athletic shoe deoderant works wonders from time to time.)

How old were you when you learned to swim?

My folks signed me up for swimming lessons when I was 6. I didn't really like it, and I've never been much interested in it. It was good to have learned young, though.

    Kayaks for the city-dweller

I just ran across an add for a two-person inflatable kayak made by Sea Eagle. The ad says it weighs 26 pounds and will hold 500 pounds. They have a winter special going for $50 off.

    Flies vs lures

It sounds like there is quite a bit to fly fishing, though I have people say that once you develop the skills, it's actually an easier way to fish than spin casting. Would you agree with that?

    Teaching an old dog....

I lived on the coast of Washington for a couple of years, just south of the Olympic National Rain Forest. We went clamming often. We werent' good at it, but it was fun.

Veterans Get New State Park Discounts & Day

Most states do allow active duty personnel of the armed forces to purchase "resident" fishing and hunting licenses rather than "non-resident" ones. Yes---they should get a break on fees related to some recreation!
