Why Don't Some People Like Inflatable Beds?

yeah, i've always hated them in the past. reason being i've used cheapos that leaked and suffered catapulting and waking up with my nose touching the ground. since then i've gotten an aerobed with a built in pump for camping (queen). the thing is so comfortable i haven't picked up my...

    Mosquitoes

I expected them to be bad in WI as well, but I hardly touched the OFF can. I did get bit around the ankles some, but it wasn't much considering my flesh has historically been mosquito candy.

I just got a new tent!!!

I just tried out my new tent at a WI state park (REI Kingdom 6) for the first time. I love that thing thus far. Very roomy with room for me to stand up and change even when we have our air mattress setup. Can't wait to put it through its paces some more this season. I really like the wall...

    Quality Guylines?

it is definitely strong enough for guy lines and probably most general-purpose camp/backpack rope applications. i didn't test the strength directly, but i imagine the guy loops on the tent will fail before the lines do. the rope is nice, just not visible which is something i was after.

    Sleeping Bag Ratings?

i've found that the little sleeping bag liners can be very nice for filling in those temperature gaps. when it's extra cold, you can sleep with the bag shut and liner, warmer with the liner and bag open, and warmer yet just the liner. i don't really like sleeping in my clothes too much.

    Quality Guylines?

i've used the micro msr red rope, and i highly suggest avoiding this rope for guy lines. they don't reflect at night despite looking like they would, and they are nearly invisible during the day because they are so thin. i think i'll look into the kelty as well because i want something that...

    Which Knife?

the fallkniven f1 is a great survival knife. full tang, excellent edge retention, super sharp, and fully tested by the swiss air force (their official survival knife). it's not too big, not too small so good for detail work but can still handle some larger stuff. it feels good in the hand as...

Newbie to Camping, tips for going with family

the cost to go camping once you have all your gear is quite minimal, but there are a lot of things you'll need to go camping that most people who've never camped before don't have. these items can add up. briansnat gave you a good starter list of the basic things you won't want to go without...

    Tick Repellent

yeah, i'm also wondering about dogs. i don't want to put anything toxic on them. i give my dog heartworm medication in the event she does get bit, but it would be nice to have something to prevent the bites in the first place so i don't have to spend a bunch of time removing ticks from her...

    Pets

i have a 7 month old puppy who i plan to bring with me camping this year. i've been camping with dogs before, but never my own. i think it should go over well, she's very well behaved and doesn't bark at random **** so she shouldn't bug any of the other campers. i'm still working out all the...

    Coffee!

for camping i bring a french press big enough to make coffee for the whole group. i like it black and bold. i usually grind the grounds right before the trip coarse, because coarse grounds work best for the french press i've found. i'm thinking i'll look for a collapsable funnel type thing...

Where do you buy your camping gear?

Gander Mountain and Cabella's definitely have some backpacking gear, but they are both more geared towards car camping. I shop at both of these places, but REI is my go-to-place for gear. They are having a big anniversary sale starting this Friday that might interest you folks. 20% one item...

    Dog fight

I agree with most everyone that the other owner is at fault 100% for not having their own dog on a leash. I also think her "put it down" comment is absurd. she clearly doesn't have a good grasp of responsible dog ownership. On the other hand, I would not ignore this dog's aggressive behavior...

    +1 Tent Logic

I actually use a x2 rule for car camping tents. That way there is enough room for everyone's gear/clothes without sleeping on top of one another. Backpacking is another story...

    Glock e-tool

i don't have this specific brand, but i find a shovel that folds sideways for entrenching to be great for camping. If it is a rainy trip, often times large puddles will form right in the middle of a campsite and an entrenching tool can be used to redirect the water from that puddle to a...
