    Homemade or professional lures?

Mine wouldn't win any beauty awards either, really. I'm no artist so I really just go for the simple shapes. The best I could say of them is that they're "functional". Still, I rather enjoy carving them even if they turn out a bit wonky sometimes. That's probably half the fun of fishing, for me. :)

Did you hear about the boy in Utah?

Just read up on that story at the Discovery Channel website (yes, I'm a subscriber — it's my guilty pleasure). That's one brave kid, no question about it. However, as I'm sure some of you know, some of the things the boy did weren't really what he should have done in order to survive. Still, the...

    Tennis Balls

You know, I've heard of that massage technique before (using bottles), but for some reason, I never can seem to remember it while camping. Usually, by the time I need it, my feet would ache so much that I wouldn't be able to remember a thing. By the way, that same tip works for massaging...

    Homemade or professional lures?

Like most folks, I learned to fish as a kid using the good old "worm on a hook". Recently, I've been going back to my roots by reliving the good old days: making my own lures, catching my bait, etc. Sure, you probably won't catch as much as you would with a professional lure, but there's a...

    Motivation

To be honest, I much prefer going alone or with only one or two other persons — since I go partly to have peace and quiet, I'd rather not have a crowd with me. I never really analyzed my reasons for trekking (I just love it), but I think part of it is the satisfaction in knowing that you...

Why does everyone say that mountain bikers ruin trails?

Perhaps it has something to do with the mechanical nature of mountain bikes that makes it so easy for people to blame? After all, backpackers and horses are more "natural", so perhaps people don't think they have as much impact as they obviously do.

    Bugs

So I guess no one here as tried those clip-on bug repellents? Never tried them myself, though from what I've read, it seems it's reasonably effective, though you'd probably want to use it in conjunction with other repellents. Someone reported a 50-75% decrease in bugs using the clip-on. One of...

    Who loves thunderstorms?

I've always loved thunderstorms ever since I was a child. Yeah, they can be dangerous at times, but I always get a visceral thrill whenever one rolls around. It's Nature at her most primal. There's nothing like standing out in the storm (as long as it's safe, of course), and feeling the wind in...
