Biking diet for 10 year old

I personally find those growth charts annoying. Here is why.. 6yr old son has never been on the chart except for the first 6 months of his life. He has always been under the "chart". He is healthy now (had a tonsil issue that hindered him for a couple years) and extremely active, a small...

    Beginner climber

Well, I have signed up for a beginner Rock Climbing event on 8-21. It is in Taylors Falls, MN. It is with a group called Minnesota Rovers (anyone heard of it? opinions?) I'm pretty excited to give it a try. I've never done any climbing at all indoors or out. I'm thinking I may go to the...

    How late are you up?

I don't remember where I was reading this but someone was out shopping for headlamps/lanterns at a REI or alike. Basically the shopper was inquireing what to use at night around camp. The store rep said "when night falls its time to sleep" So that got me thinking.... How late do people...

    Keeping fit

I need some wintery fun I've been thinking a lot about winter. I hate winter. I mean I really really do not like winter at all. I'm thinking this may be due to the fact I want to hibernate away from the cold and do very little outside. Then this also leads to winter being very long and...

My Wimpy Friends and their Wimpy Kids

Just Sad I have city kids. I did not grow up in the city. I grew up getting dirty, dirt bikes, bottle rocket wars, army, making forts, walking cricks. Oh but that was when kids had imaginations!! Due to uncontrollables in the past I have only been able to get back to nature over the past...

    Clip-on Insect Repellents

I've never tried them before but my pregnant sister in law says she puts it on the back of her camping chair when hanging outside and she says they work pretty well. She's avoiding deet when pregnant. I'm assuming with really heavy bugs they would not do much, or possibly even in heavy wind...

    White Stag Tent??

Does anyone have or have had/know of this brand White Stag? And any insight on the quality of their tents?? My family had a cabin style White Stag tent when I was a kid and my mom brought it to our family camping trip a couple weekends ago. I didn't remember how thick the faberic was on...

    First time Backcountry camping

Newanderthal - Great tip on the marker tape. I was trying to come up with something similar and was leaning towards rope but the tape would be much cheaper I'm sure. I have read your article on how to lighten the load and there is great stuff in there. I do appriciate your responses. Now I...

    First time Backcountry camping

Great stuff. I do plan to post a list of my gear for when I go in case I am missing something vital. This is comforting. I never gave it a second thought as to "can I do it" but with many people around me thinking it's crazy or a huge risk got me second guessing "should I do it" I'm...

    First time Backcountry camping

Thanks Judy Ann. I understand your concern about humans. They are most unpredictable, and I too think about that. Especially when I camp only 20 miles from the city in walk in only areas. I'm new to this particular park but my first thought was unfriendly travelers or passerbys who may use...

    First time Backcountry camping

Thanks I appreciate your response to the question SmackontheWeb and Lamebeaver. over 200 views on this thread on only two opinions.. Is it a dumb question? I'm asking because those around me think it's a big risk to go it for the first time alone. I guess I don't see it as a big...

    First time Backcountry camping

No, no. I'm not cutting trails. I'm not out there cutting live wildlife. Sorry, I know I'm new here but i thought that would go without saying. Any thoughts on if its wise to do or not?

    First time Backcountry camping

Ok, lets forget about details of what I'm bringing. Basic question is, is it wise for a camper with significant camping experience to go into the backcountry alone on his/her first backcountry overnight(s) trip? Looking for thoughts/opinions with reasons, as I will (probably already have :-) )...

    First time Backcountry camping

Well, I always bring my hatchet along for collecting/splittin wood, digging, and anything else a heavy hand held item can do. The machete is a new addition to my gear and it makes me and my partner just feel safer. Sure it is not going to do anything against a person with a gun or bear. But...

    First time Backcountry camping

Is it ill advised to attempt backcountry camping for the first time alone? I've been camping a lot these past couple years. Usually walk-in sites in parks. I have basically all the gear I would need to be self sufficient. I've been out the past 4 weekends in a row camping. Is it a bad idea...

    Drinkers

I do I do enjoy a drink around the camp fire. Beer, Wine, rum and some good smoke goes great with the outdoors, IMO. Never get out of control is the key.

Be Safe Camping with Kids - It's Your Responsibility!!!

First time with kids Took the kids camping for their first time this past weekend. We went to a state park and chose a campground close to bathrooms and a rec/play area. Normally I choose walk-in sites to be away from others, but for the kids' first time I thought this would be best (city...
