My trick is to get several small paper disposable cups and fill each one with 4-5 cotton balls that have been rolled in petroleum jelly. One cup burns like a charm.

I like to use dryer lint as it is cheap. I'm thinking about mixing it a little bit of wax and something else to get it to burn a little longer though.

I make my own firestarter logs by rolling newspaper tightly, dipping in oil and then parafin. I make small logs about four to six inches long and two to three inches in diameter. They work great.

I've read about using dryer lint. What you do is get a cardboard egg carton and fill each section with dryer lint. Then you pour melted paraffin into each section and just tear off what you need when you want to start a fire.
