What is the best way to remove soot on pans? I use sand when I am near a stream but the scratch my pans. It is not that I'm very careful with my pans but my hands are hurting when I'm scrubbing the pans with sands.

Someone told me once to put dish washing soap on the outside bottom of the pan. It makes cleaning easier. I do not think I would do it with cast iron though. It can sink in if you use soap. I would just use hot water from another pot.

Someone recently managed to track it in from their hiking boots into our house and we did not see it until after it settled. We attempted two things, the only two handy at the time. The first being resolve which normally gets everything out, then the cheaper generic called something shotshot or spotshot, which actually worked.

Just rub soap on the bottom of the pans before you cook with them in the fire. Works every time. rub it from outside edge all over the bottom. Makes clean up later super easy.
