How Did You Learn To Wilderness Camp?

I'm not sure how prepared I'd be if I was forced to survive off the land for any length of time. I haven't fully tested myself. I have learned quite a bit about what I can eat or not, how to avoid dangerous animals, tracking and creating or finding shelter. I'm self taught, mostly, as I've...

    Bad cheese!

Hmm, that is odd. I've never had a problem as long as the cheese is kept in a cooler with ice packs (like I usually do). Even just in a lunch bag cooler it's been fine.

    Greetings

Welcome Traveler. You will find a very friendly bunch of people in here. I know I was pleasantly surprised when I joined. It's nice to be able to talk about what we love to do, isn't it?

Do you prefer a Trek or a Hike?

Anything involved trooping off through the woods is a hike to me, whether using trails or not, so I likely wouldn't have thought to ask what to expect either. I've always thought trek and hike were interchangeable but it must vary from region to region.

    Shin splints

Potassium may help for muscle cramps but shin splints are not the same. There is another disorder that can seem like shin splints but is more dangerous due to circulatory issues that you should see a doctor and not make this diagnosis for yourself.

    Turducken

It definitely sounds like a lot of work but I'm not sure I'd care for this dish. I've never had duck but have always heard that it can be quite greasy. I'd love to hear from someone who has actually tried this dish.

    Sledding with the snowmobile

It wouldn't be child neglect but you could end up charged with child endangerment. People have done this and ended up getting their kids killed. Yes, it's a freak thing but it's happened enough that it is illegal in many placed.

    Are You A Minimilast?

I wouldn't call myself a minimalist as I find I like my creature comforts a lot more as I get older. At the same time, I hate packing and unpacking any more than I need to so I do try to get by with the least that I can.

Forest Service Open to Allowing Mountain Bikes on Continental Divide Trail, But What

What's the big deal about bicycles? They don't add to pollution or anything. I could see fighting against anything motorized in our national parks but I don't see the harm in bicycles allowed in some areas.

How old were you when you bagged your first deer?

My ten year old nephew bagged his first deer last season and his younger brother will be going out with them this year. Their dad taught them gun safety and has taught them how to shoot. I thought they were too young but I was told that I was being a "sissy". LOL. He was so proud that he got...

    Uncomfortable seats

I don't ride bicycles really anymore and this is a large part of that. Those little seats they put on bikes these days just do not work for my size behind or something. So uncomfortable! Remember the days of the banana seat? Those were comfortable.

    Bread idea

We use rubbermaid breadsaver containers to take bread in. They don't get squished and the bread stays soft instead of going stale, which is likely to happen if someone doesn't put the twist tie back on.

    Rockhound spots in New England?

I have a thing for stones and always have. I'd like to find some unique semi-precious stones around here but the closest I've come was amethyst. I love amethyst so that's cool but I'm wondering if anyone knows of a great spot for a rockhound to hike to?

    Wet and humid

I loved it! Of course, I wasn't out hunting so perhaps that makes a difference. We had a perfectly lousy summer so it's nice to get a surprise shot of warmth so late in the fall.

    Ice fishing?

I've been ice fishing and I hated it...lol. Boring and freezing are just not a great combination for me. Most of the people I know go smelting when they go ice fishing and since that's one fish I don't like to eat, I have no burning need to go.

    Animal encounters.

My scariest brushes with wildlife were not when camping...lol. I once took a broom out to shoo off what I thought was the usual raccoons in the trash and almost thumped a skunk. I backed up really fast with the broom still in the air! And once when trying to shoo off a huge pregnant raccoon...

Is kayaking way different from canoeing?

I've canoed many times but have yet to try out a kayak. My sister rented a cottage this summer to visit my mother and the rest of the family and there were three kayaks included. Her, her boyfriend and my mother went out and no one had any accidents and it was their first time so it gives me...

Do you change up your food with the season?

I'm a sissy - I only go camping when it's warm out so I only stick to the cooler foods. We usually have a lot of fish because we try to eat what we catch while we're out but we always take salad fixings and fruit.

    Worse thing about camping?

Now that I'm older, it is mainly the insects that aggravate me, too. I don't mind the setup and takedown phases - generally everyone pitches in and it doesn't take too long. But I hate bugs!

What is your recipe for fresh caught trout cooked over a campfire?

You can do this in a cast iron skillet or wrapped in foil - depends on what you're doing for the fire. Place cleaned fish in skillet or on foil, put a couple pats of butter inside (assuming skin still on), a bit of salt and pepper and then pour some beer over it (just a bit). A few minutes...
