    First time Backcountry camping

There is no reason why you should not be able to do a solo. I suggest you plan something in a loop 5-10 miles. That way if you feel you should bail it is doable. If bears are a problem in your area, practice bear hangs before you go out. Learning to toss a rock bag over a branch 20' high takes...

    Leak maybe?

Did you use a drop under it? The pressure and movement of your body can cause water to pump up through the floor when the ground is heavily saturated. Or if you used a drop did it extend past the wall of the tent? If it did water will puddle on top of it and again it will pump through the floor.

    Colorado Camping Recommendation

You do not have to buy a solar shower or a shower enclosure. I use one of those clear plastic water carriers, 2.5 gallon is more manageable to hang. Then take a small tarp and rope to make a privacy barrier and stand on a piece of closed cell foam. Remember to use the valve to conserve water, it...

    Best product to fight Mosquitoes!

HA! How about Dr. Bronners peppermint soap? Or any of those scented soaps...understand I am not knocking the product because it is great stuff. I do use the Unscented Baby-Mild. I just never understood why people want to lather themselves down with a bear attractant...specially in Grizz...

    Best product to fight Mosquitoes!

I don't want anything on my body that smells good while in the backcountry....Bears like to eat things that smell good.

    Best product to fight Mosquitoes!

$15 @ Dicks Sporting Goods. Works great if you wear long sleeve and pants but I don't except in the shoulder seasons. I have just about switched entirely to using Picaridin based repellents over deet. Just as effective, less smelly, doesn't melt plastic, and is safe to use on pets...and...

    KOA camping?

Some have tent only areas, especially out west. They are not my first choice but I know someone that owns one and if I make it out to her area I know I will stay there. I prefer the semi-primitive national forest campgrounds for the most part, the price is right and usually no RVs. I found I can...

    Saws?

Since I have several I just carry a Corona Pruning Saw. I like the Sawvivor but just can't convince myself to buy one when I have 4 Coronas laying in my garage. Hatchets are too heavy and too NOISY. Someone whacking on wood is something I don't want to hear when I backpack.

    Shortening aluminum tent poles

The option is there...Fridge you have seen my solo tent set up. That is the tent I did it to. It comes down to how confident you feel doing it...it took me a month and the frustration setting it up on a trip to build that confidence up. I am not telling him to do it but if craniac has the...

    Shortening aluminum tent poles

I had to shorten the poles on my Moss tents because I was having the same problem. A call to their repair person and I did it. Place the pole, protected by a very thick rag or piece of closed cell foam pad to prevent damaging it, in a vise close to the endtip. Grasp the endtip with a pair of...

    Hiking Boots?

Keen has gotten great reviews by media and wearers. I know a couple of people that love them. Besides arch support, two other areas to watch for is heel slip and toe box room. Both will cause blisters and pain. When you walk down a slop your toes should not jam into the front of the...

    How young for gun safety?

It is never too early to start IMO. I remember knowing that guns kill things from my earliest memories and they were not to be played with at any time. I attended gun safety lessons put on by the Fish and Wildlife Dept. for several years in a row. Must have done some good because I hunted solo...

    Medicine man wanted

Conjunctivitis or 'pink eye' is usually the result of rubbing your dirty hands in your eyes. Still fairly common for farmers, especially those working with livestock. It can also be an allergic reaction to any number of things from dust to plant pollen. Most cases go away on their own after 3...

    Hiking Boots?

That is a loaded question...I like leather lined Norwegian welt boots made by Limmer Boots...others go with a good pair of trail runners, some swear by Hy-teck, Salomon, Vasque, Kayland, Scarpa, Keen, Merrell...or, or, or...It comes down to personal preference really. Brands fit different feet...
