    Ready to go

It sounds like Santa was good to you this year. :tinysmile_grin_t: We went ahead and bought our boys their own tent after much debate, they'll be 12 and 10 by the time we go camping again. They are so excited, I don't think they'll be able to wait until Spring.

    The miniboggin

I can't say that I remember what you are talking about, but I remember these little round plastic discs on which we would fly down the sledding hills. They sure weren't built for comfort or control, but we loved them.

Do you cook over the campfire?

We use a small propane grill when we go camping and really don't try to do anything more complicated than smores with the campfire. Do you use your campfire to cook?

    Climbing after a break

Just make sure that your injury is completely healed and that you can support your weight without re-injuring the area. Maybe trying to climb some hills with steep inclines or a hiking area with some rugged terrain would be a good test.

Do you drink when you camp?

My husband will enjoy a couple of beers at the end of the day when we go out camping. I generally don't drink that much, so I really don't feel I'm missing anything.

    Would you go ice fishing?

My brother's friend went ice fishing and he pulled his truck out onto the lake he was going to fish.(I guess he saw several other trucks do the same.) Well, needless to say, he picked a bad spot and the truck fell into the lake. He had to pay all kinds of fines for the truck going into the...

Have you ever let a friend camp in your back yard?

We set up our tent in the backyard a couple of times for our boys to have sleepovers with their friends, but that's as close as we've ever gotten to that. What a difficult situation.

    Extreme camping.

I couldn't agree with you more. Actually, one of my favorite parts of playing outside in the cold, is looking forward to a nice warm fire and maybe some hot cocoa to cap off the day.

    Their own tent.

Right now we have a nice sized tent that comfortably sleeps our family of 4, at least that's my opinion. Our boy, ages 11 and 9, have been asking for their own tent. Am I being overprotective, I really am weary of being separated from them out in the open, and i prefer knowing where they are...

    Christmas Gifts

A new stove would be great. But, for me, what I really need is a new pair of hiking boots. I managed to actually put a tear in mine this past summer and while it's not that big, I'd hate to end up getting waterlogged.

    Hiking poles.

I was wondering if anyone here uses hiking poles. I am considering still doing some hikes with the winter weather and was wondering if a pole would be a good investment to help keep my footing?

    Backpacking through Europe

I've heard that you have to be careful with staying in the hostels. I was told that some are nice, but then there are others that can be kind of scary. Is there some place, maybe online, where you can check them out?

    Shin splints

This is good advice. I would talk to your doctor first. When a friend of mine was having these kind of issues it ended up being that she just needed better arch support in her shoes.

    Cave exploring.

I had never really heard about this until the recent tragic events in Utah where a "caver" was trapped in a small crevice and was unable to be rescued. Has anyone here done this or know someone who has tried this?

    Rock Climbing

The kids tried a rock wall at an amusement park, but that's as close as any of us have gotten to rock climbing. They did pretty well, but said it was harder than they thought it would be.

    Some people

Yes, you never know how someone might react or do, so I would also say it's wise just to find or call a ranger. It's a shame that people can be that ignorant.

Do you camp in your backyard?

We did this just last summer. We had a trip planned and my husband ended up having to work. So instead of us leaving him behind, the kids and I surprised him by setting the tent up in the backyard. We had a great time.

    Budgeting

I never thought about it as budgeting, but we have a relative idea how much we'll need for a trip. We usually go for 2-4 days and it's just our family, so with the shorter trips, it's easy to keep the food costs manageable.

    What's the silliest/most obvious thing you've forgotten?

This past summer on one of our trips, we forgot the meat we were going to grill. We had snacks and condiments but nothing to throw over the fire. Hubby thought I threw it into the cooler and I though he took care of it.:tinysmile_aha_t: Hubby made a quick trip into town to remedy the...

Weekly Topic: What does Wilderness mean to you?

There's what I think wilderness really is, like what you see in nature shows. Where man really does not have an impact, and his presence is not seen in any way. Then, there's what I personally experience. I grew up in a big city. So, whenever I stop seeing houses or hearing any kind of...
