    New here

Hi Jennifer - It's great to see you here. I think it's a fine bunch of people here, and I'd suggest that you have a look at some of the photos in the album area. I've posted a modest shot there of a double rainbow I saw last year. I'll see you around the threads.

    Metal detectors

I've never done it, but I agree that it sounds like a great idea. I can imagine near water you may find some fishing lures. When I was a kid, I found a penny that was over 100 years old... I didn't have a metal detector but it was exciting. I wonder what else I may have found with a metal detector.

    Chocolate Bananas

That sounds like a very decadent dessert for the campfire, and as long as you don't mangle the bananas, the rest of the requirements are extremely easy to pack. Actually, bruising the bananas may not be a terrible thing either.

    Used campers

I'd expect that you'd get a better deal off-season. Do they advertise that kind of thing in an auto traders's publication near you? I think you could probably find some in the books they sell around where I live. Good luck with the purchase.

    Freeze Dried Fruit

I like dried mangoes, bananas, papaya and most dried fruits I guess. It's easy to pack for camping, and can be part of a stash at home to have food for a few days if the power went down or there was some kind of emergency.

    Raccoons

Once in the suburbs were were surprised when a large raccoon got on our back deck and tried to open our garbage bin. It was surprising how bold he was. Our cats were scared to get close to the window. Raccoons seem to feel right at home even around houses.

    Repelling

I've never done anything like that. I know someone who repelled down the side of a building, under close supervision. I don't think I'll be trying either kind, because I'm not good with heights. I think it's cool if you can do it though.

Getting too old to camp in a tent

I wondered about a hammock too, but I have no idea if that would be appropriate for someone with back issues. I know in my experience sleeping in a hammock, it was great. I'd definitely be trying to find a solution, assuming you still enjoy the other aspects of camping. How about a camping...

    Entertaining Young Campers

When I was younger, I remember getting into stories around the campfire. The counselor told some scary stories, which I later assumed were designed to discourage us from wandering off later in the week.

    Durable Tubes

I'm just curious - Do you use the ones that are designed for that kind of use, or actual inner tubes for tires of large vehicles? I've never used a tube like that. You can also ride them down a snowy slope, so I guess they're a pretty good investment for leisure.

Ever met someone living at the campsite?

Firefly, I hope things work out well for you... These definitely are tough times. I wonder if someone could learn the rules about the maximum length of stay and rotate camp sites and get around the restriction that way? I think living in a campsite is an intelligent solution to some situations.

What's The Funniest Thing You've Seen Hiking?

Maybe that's how you know they're on the same team? :tinysmile_hmm_t: Sometimes when we're walking down by the lakeshore, we'll see lots of different dogs. What cracks me up is when I see a normal sized dog like a mixed terrier carrying a piece of driftwood that's about six feet long. It's...

    Hot dog toppings

How about heating some sauerkraut as well? That would add to the work, but some people would go for it, especially if you were having a few sausages too. I always try to drain the juice off it before putting it on... I don't like soggy buns.

    No more tailgators

That's interesting - I wasn't familiar with what a Claymore was before, but after Googling it, I get it. That would get your attention on the highway.

    Mosquito Maddness

I thought of Citronella products too, including candles. I'm not sure if that would work in the deep woods or not. Wasn't there at least a theory about taking some kind of vitamin B supplement or something like that for a while to naturally repel mosquitoes?

    Pets

I agree - I would definitely not take a cat camping. We have two indoor cats and if we're gone for more than one night, we arrange to have somebody come in and look after them.

    GPS Classes

I've not heard of organized classes for GPS devices. I know my father-in-law bought one and returned it because he couldn't get it to outline an alternate route that he wanted to take. His was a fairly basic one, but had a lot of features and different language capabilities.

    Blue Crabbing

I don't think I've had blue crabs, but I like the varieties I've tried. I've had dungeoness, and I guess king crab. I don't use much melted butter on mine though. Are blue crabs much different than the other kinds?

    Under the stars

When I was younger, I used to go out walking with friends and we seemed to pay more attention to the stars that I typically do now. It's great to re-discover them every now and then. As for hammocks, once I fell asleep in one on vacation and my wife had a hard time waking me. It was very...

    Favorite season for the outdoors

I can really enjoy all of the seasons, but I think I like summer the most - If it's not too hot and I'm not getting bombarded by mosquitoes or black flies. I do enjoy living where I am because I get to experience all of the seasons.
