    Just a beautiful morning here...

thanks for the replies, all. It was one of those perfect weekends and we didn't even have to travel from home to get it. Need to do it more often...

    Big tent or small?

If it's just me, the smallest I can pack. With the wife and kids, kinda hard to do that. LOL.

    Christmas lights out!

we did the inside stuff today- tree up and lights around the fireplace. Like you, it just seemed like the perfect day for it- even though it's early for us too.

    Just a beautiful morning here...

My son and I planned a 3.5 mile hike this morning and got up about 0600 to see nature waking up when the sun came up. The hike was wonderful, the time spent with him was priceless... Then, we split some old oak for firewood tonight and we'll get the family together in the backyard for hot...

    Christmas Wish List

Hatchet would be nice to throw in the gear box. Maybe one of those cap lights, too. I'm easy to please. LOL

Worst piece of gear you ever bought?

I fell for it too. The plastic "glass" part broke when I shut mine too hard.

Enjoy! I'm planning on a 20 mile ride through the country this Sunday if the weather isn't too cold.

    Thanksgiving in dutch ovens

No, but it's definitely an idea to keep in mind. When we break out the ovens, we usually use them for desserts (cobbler or dump cake) and meals like chili, spaghetti, pot pies, etc. Please let us know how it turns out!

    Crazy weather

Tornadoes in my part of GA yesterday (Temps about 80 before the storms), going to be cold tomorrow (33 is the low). 50 degree difference in basically 24 hours is unreal.

    hike canceled

I got in two miles before the warnings hit around here. Tornadoes and heavy winds missed us to the North and to the West so we got lucky. Weather.com is the only thing I use for a heads up. I'm lucky to get cell reception at home and only have 3 TV channels, so the 'Net is the way to go for me.

    What Was Your Best Trip?

My son's last Scouts trip. It was at our local campground (Camp Osborne) and was a Scouts Olympics/Jamboree type of camp out. There were 24 packs of Cub Scouts from neighboring counties/districts and ours came in 3rd place. We had the honor of working with another pack who had two handicapped...

    Sunrise or Sunset

Always a morning person too. I love a sunrise- I try to get out every weekend and take a hike around the house and watch the sun come up. Peaceful, quiet and serene.

    Hiking boots

I've used Saucony trail running shoes up until today. Bought a pair of Sonoma hiking boots this past weekend. Just finished 2 miles in them and they're ok. No problems yet. I'm wondering the best way to break them in if anyone has any tips? Just wear them until they feel good or toss them when...

    went hiking for first time

Good Deal! Knowing that "exercise" and "fun" can go hand in hand when hiking makes it even better, huh?

    So, What's Your Plans?

Headed to the GA/TN line for a few days with the family- going to bring my Nordic Poles, a backpack and a few supplies and sneak off one of those days to do some exploring in the mountains. Can't wait!

    Electric or not?

Primitive sites are my favorite, bar none.

    Some beginner items?

Will tents be needed or is there a place you'll actually stay? Same with food items and extra clothing. If someone is driving a truck loaded down with backpacks, food, extra clothes, etc. while you guys hike behind, that'll sway a lot of the answers here. A good flashlight and a good pair of...

Any camping gear on your Christmas list?

This is my second year being a Den Leader in my kid's Scout Pack. I was very unprepared last year for camping trips, etc. I grew up in South Florida where it never got cold and "assumed" I could camp up here in Georgia the same way. Big mistake. So, this year I've already splurged on a good...
